Your personal information is extremely valuable to merchants. However, many merchants do give you the option of not being added to their mailing lists or to the mailing lists of "business partners." The term "business partners" sounds like a cozy, trusted company that the merchant does business with. This is not necessarily so. In fact, many business partners are often total strangers to the merchant. A business partner can be anyone who is willing to buy, swap, or rent your information. Therefore, when you hear the term "business partner," you might be justified to replace the term with "anyone willing to buy your information from us."
When you make an on-line purchase, you suddenly become extremely valuable to the merchant. Because you've just made an online purchase, statistics show that you are much more likely to make another purchase as opposed to someone who has not. You may enjoy and appreciate receiving advertisements from various vendors (many ad campaigns often are accompanied by nice discounts and specials). Then again, you might not enjoy receiving dozens of e-mails each week.
Bottom line:
Your merchant should have a
Privacy Policy that explains how your e-mail address will be used. It is a
valuable piece of information and you should understand what will be done with
it before you give it out. Once you understand and feel comfortable with
how it a particular merchant will use it, don't be too afraid to give it out. It is
a tool that can allow your responsible merchant to better serve you.
