Almost all online stores now post a Privacy Policy, which is a
huge improvement over the past several years. Unfortunately, these policies
are not always easy to find. Be aware that once you find them, they may
not be complete.
The most important piece of information to glean from these sites is
whether the merchant will sell, rent, or share your personal information with
anyone. Most sites are now allowing you, the consumer, to easily choose
whether your information is shared. In some cases, you are even allowed to
review, modify, or delete your personal information.
Your personal information is very valuable. If you make a purchase, you
are a proven buyer that now has a track record of making an online purchase. The
category of the item that you purchased is also recorded and the marketing folks
now know what you are interested in. If you just bought a DVD player, for
example, they now know that you might be in the market for buying or renting DVD
movies, games, or music. You might even be in the market for a big-screen TV, an
entertainment center, camcorder, or similar equipment. If your valuable
information is shared with other suppliers, you can expect to receive
advertising and promotional information along these lines. If you were a DVD
movie vendor, wouldn't you rather market to someone who just bought a DVD player
rather than do dozens of "cold contacts" with unknown consumers? There is a
significantly higher chance of making a sale with a solid lead rather than a
cold lead. As a consumer, you might appreciate this specialized marketing
(because you are indeed in the market for DVD movies and related equipment) or
you might want your privacy and not have to deal with an onslaught of junk mail
(e-mail and postal).
If you are concerned about your privacy, the bottom line is: Read the Privacy Policy!
