When you select a category from the drop-down list box at the top of each StoreVillage.com page, you will be shown a list of our rated and ranked stores for that category. For each store, you'll see the StoreVillage.com's rank, store banner image, detailed description, compliments about the store, and cautions regarding the store. Below we explain how we determine the data that appears in each column for a particular store:
Determining the rank of a store in a particular category is more of an art but it requires a lot of work. Our evaluators carefully visit the online store and attempt to go through as much of the store as possible. We read about the company (sometimes we have to do outside research to get information about the company) and carefully read their customer service features (if any). We evaluate the ease-of-use and beauty of the site. Does the site allow the shopper to easily find, examine, and purchase products? Does the site look and feel like the type of store it is portraying? If it's a home craft and collectible store (e.g., Terry's Village), is it warm and cozy and give the shopper an appropriate atmosphere? We determine the types of credit cards they accept (we consider major cards to be Visa, MasterCard, and American Express). We look for little extras like sizing charts, specials (e.g., free shipping), catalogs, gift certificates, gift wrap, the ability to pay by check, etc. Most of the stores we evaluate are rejected and are not allowed in the village because they aren't worth ranking in our opinions.
This section usually contains a banner image from the store itself. You must click on this image to access the store.
The description contains our summary of the store. We try to give you the feel of the store and share it's best attributes. From the description alone, you should be able to determine whether this store has a good chance of offering you the product you are looking for or not. You can't find this type of information from search engines and this is where StoreVillage.com offers a differentiation from typical me-too Internet shopping malls.
While not comprehensive, the compliments section contains some of the highlights and best features of the store. You can use the compliments and cautions columns to compare different stores in this category.
